About the Island

The Exumas are the crown jewel of the Bahamian Out Islands, a stunning chain of 365 cays scattered across sapphire waters so clear they can be seen from space. This destination is world-renowned for its surreal natural beauty and unique wildlife encounters that you won’t find anywhere else. The centerpiece of any trip is a visit to Big Major Cay, home to the famous swimming pigs, and Compass Cay, where you can wade into the water with gentle nurse sharks. For fans of cinema and adventure, Thunderball Grotto offers a breathtaking underwater cave experience famously featured in James Bond films. Beyond the wildlife, the Exumas are a sanctuary of peace; you can walk for miles on the pristine, untouched sands of the Tropic of Cancer Beach or explore the shifting white sandbars that emerge at low tide near Little Exuma. Whether you’re staying in the capital of George Town or retreating to a private island resort, the Exumas offer a raw, rhythmic escape into nature that feels both exclusive and timeless.

What To Bring

Because the Exumas are all about the water, a high-quality dry bag is your most important accessory to keep cameras and towels safe during boat island-hopping tours. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a long-sleeved rash guard; the sun reflects intensely off the white sand and pale blue shallows. You will definitely want your own snorkel mask and fins for spontaneous stops at hidden reefs, along with water shoes for exploring rocky grottoes. Since many of the best experiences involve feeding the local wildlife, keep some small cash on hand for "pig food" or shark entrance fees. Finally, bring a reusable water bottle and plenty of snacks, as many of the smaller cays are beautifully uninhabited with no shops in sight.
